A new competition for young pianists will be held as part of the Winter Festival in Ljubljana at the end of February and early March giving up-and-coming performers the chance to kick-start their concert careers.

More than a hundred entrants registered and 30 have been short-listed in a process that world renowned Slovenian pianist Tomšič Srebotnjak, who chairs the jury, said was very demanding.

Barring any unexpected cancellations, 24 pianists from 16 countries are expected to compete. Six will make the finals and they will perform on 3 and 4 March at Cankarjev Dom accompanied by the RTV Slovenija Symphony Orchestra.

The winner will get a €30,000 prize, money that Darko Brlek, the director of the Ljubljana Festival, says is comparable to the prize money at the world's largest competitions of this kind.

Italian pianist Epifanio Comis has been hired to act as the artistic director of the competition.

The competition will affirm Ljubljana's standing as a city of music and give young pianists an opportunity to build their careers, said Brlek.
