Thousands Expected to Protest against Political Elites
The latest in a string of protests under the banner "Gotovi so!" (They're Finished!) will be guarded by hundreds of police officers due to fears of violence.
President Danilo Türk has called for peaceful protests, urging people not to give in to provocations so as not to sully the message of the protests.
The protest movement, organised mostly through social networks, was sparked by popular anger aimed against Maribor Mayor Franc Kangler but has turned into a national display of disappointment with the state of politics in Slovenia.
"It appears that the protests in Maribor and Ljubljana are only the beginning of Slovenian revolt against the country's political elites as a number of them are expected across the country," says Tine Kračun, director of the Institute for Strategic Solutions.
Apart from the protest in Ljubljana today, rallies have also been announced in Koper, Nova Gorica and Novo Mesto.
"The protests indicate that Slovenians will no longer ignore corruption and bad political decisions coupled with strict austerity measures being put forward by the Government," says Kračun.
