Slovenia Could Get New Govt Within a Week
The outgoing government of Janez Janša needed only six days from the presentation of the line-up to the appointment in early 2012 and Borut Pahor's cabinet before that needed eight days.
After the list of candidates is filed, each candidate is interviewed by the relevant parliamentary body in 3-7 days, whereupon the body's chairman sends the speaker and PM-designate an opinion on the candidate. Bratušek's candidates are expected to be interviewed on Monday and Tuesday.
In case of a negative opinion, the prime minister-designate has another three days to propose a new candidate.
After the candidates are heard before relevant committees, the National Assembly takes a plenary vote on the government in a package. This might happen as early as Wednesday at an extraordinary session.
If the list of ministers is voted down, the PM-designate can propose within ten days a new list, which may include the same candidates. If the second list is voted down, the PM-designate may propose a vote on individual candidates, in which the appointment of at least two thirds of the ministers is enough to install the government.
New candidates for the remaining posts must be proposed in another ten days or the new prime minister may appoint interim ministers directly for a maximum of three months.
After the appointment, each minister is sworn in before the National Assembly and than takes over from their predecessor.
Slovenia's next government will have 12 ministries - following the 5 March legislative changes reintroducing an independent Culture Ministry - and one minister without portfolio to head the Office for Slovenians Abroad.
