Born in 1974, Omerzel is an innovator with a degree in robotics. He has his own company, Lastinski, based in the city of Novo mesto (SE) which develops vending machine-integrated payphone services.

Omerzel, who is new to politics, also worked as project and product manager at Ultra, a company formerly co-owned by Gregor Golobič, the former head of the non-parliamentary party Zares.

The DL informed PM Alenka Bratušek of its candidate yesterday, whereupon Bratušek sent Omerzel's nomination to parliament. She also informed the speaker of Igor Maher's resignation as minister of infrastructure and spatial planning.

The National Assembly has seven days to take note of Maher's resignation. During this time, procedures to appoint Omerzel will also be running.

If appointed, Omerzel will succeed Maher, who resigned only a few days after he was sworn in as infrastructure and spatial planning minister, due to a shed he reportedly illegally built at the seaside.
