Vesel, vying for the post along with the head of the budget oversight office at the Finance Ministry Nataša Prah, was already indicated as the more probable candidate in last week's first round of consultations with deputy faction leaders.

The vote in parliament is to take place in a month's time, and if appointed with an absolute majority, Vesel will succeed Igor Šoltes at the helm of the Court of Audit when his term ends on 31 May.

Šoltes was initially also among the candidates, but he withdrew his bid, after questions arose whether holding consecutive nine-year terms was appropriate.
