MPs to Decide on Fate of Fiscal Rule
The fate of today's opposition-sponsored parliamentary session is still unclear - while the prime minister did not touch on the subject, opposition People's Party (SLS) president Franc Bogovič said an option on the table was to interrupt the session and postpone it to the beginning of May when more would be clear about whether the fiscal rule can be inserted in the Constitution in its current form.
Should calculations show that the fiscal rule cannot be implemented as it is, the proposal should be returned to the parliamentary Constitution Commission for modification, Bogovič said.
He stressed that the fiscal rule must eventually be inserted into the Constitution. Changes to the Constitution however require two-thirds of votes in parliament, a consensus which has so far proven elusive due to objections from the Social Democrats (SD) and Positive Slovenia (PS).
