"It is no secret that Janša will run for a new term," Černač, former minister of infrastructure and spatial planning, said during a debate with the opposition.

His statement comes after the SDS announced it would hold a congress in Celje on 11 May to adopt a resolution and elect a new leadership.

SDS spokesman Jernej Pavlin told the STA that the deadline for submitting candidacies was still open and that candidates could be proposed even as the congress was already under way.

Janša was last confirmed as president at the May 2009 congress and is by far the longest serving party leader in Slovenia.
