Activities as Part of Europe Week Beginning Today
Main squares of several cities across the country will from Tuesday to Saturday host various information and social activities as part of the Europe Week, including in Maribor, Celje, Ljubljana, Slovenj Gradec and Nova Gorica. The activities will aim to provide European citizens an insight into their rights and opportunities in the 27-nation bloc.
A number of activities in which participants will be able to test their knowledge of the EU, win prizes and discuss EU's cultural heritage with European volunteers from other member states will also take place.
The week's highlight will be held on Europe Day (marked on 9 May) and will feature a session with European Commissioner for the Environment Janez Potočnik during which participants will be able to discuss topics such as the EU, European citizenship, environment and economy.
The session in Ljubljana will be one of 42 Citizens' Dialogues, which are being held from autumn 2012 to spring 2014 in countries across the EU, the Government Communication Office (UKOM) said.
Several activities for primary and secondary-school students will also come to a close this week, including a prize competition entitled "Europe in the School" in which over 1,000 students are taking part.
As part of Europe Week, several Slovenian cities will also host the European Film Week. The festival will feature free screenings of 18 select European film productions in Ljubljana, Maribor, Celje, Velenje, Slovenj Gradec, Radovljica, Sežana, Izola, Nova Gorica, Ptuj, Trbovlje, Domžale and Krško.
