Strategic Partnership Discussed by Slovenian, Turkish Speakers
In a statement after their talks, Veber suggested that concluding a strategic partnership with Turkey was a major challenge and also a priority for Slovenia, which is currently restructuring its economy and banking system.
"The fact is that Turkey dealt with these issues before the global economic crisis and found successful solutions, making it an extremely important partner not only in the region but also in the EU," he said.
Cicek said Turkey stood ready to share its experience in carrying out financial reform with Slovenia.
"Despite the instability in our region, Turkey is striving to boost investment and exports and is in this respect a very reliable partner," said the Turkish speaker.
The pair concluded that the good political relations between the countries presented a platform for boosting economic ties, including in energy and finance.
Veber and Cicek also touched on Turkey's efforts to join the EU, with the Slovenian official reiterating Slovenia's outright support for Turkey's membership aspirations.
Cicek thanked Slovenia for the support, saying Turkey would continue to strive for membership and saying that opposition to Turkey's membership in the EU stemmed from prejudice.
Apart from meeting representatives of the deputy groups, Cicek was also received yesterday by President Borut Pahor.
He is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Alenka BratuĊĦek and National Council President Mitja Bervar on Wednesday.
