Compositions by Richard Wagner, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and Anton Bruckner, performed by the Purpur orchestra and the Ivan Goran choir under conductor Ivan Repušić and with the accompaniment of the capital's church bells, will open the festival.

On until 10 September, the festival will mark the 200th anniversary of the births of Wagner and Giuseppe Verdi and highlight Russian culture with concerts, theatre productions and workshops.

The festival will feature Wagner's famous four-opera cycle "The Ring of the Nibelung", performed by the Mariinsky Theatre from St Petersburg in July and September under the guidance of Valery Gergiev.

The Italian composer Verdi will be paid tribute to by the Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra, the Slovenian Chamber Choir and the Slovene National Theatre Maribor Choir, conducted by Andres Mustonen. In addition, solo artists from Italy's La Scala will perform concert arias under the name Verdi gala.

The Choir Mikhall Ivanovich Glinka from St Petersburg will present their Russian music heritage.

After last year's success with "Hair" and "Jesus Christ Superstar", the London-based West End will return to Ljubljana to perform "Grease".

The festival's diverse programme will also include four ballet performances by the Swiss Bejart Ballet Lausanne, the Slovenian National Theatre Maribor's ballet performance of "Romeo and Juliet", a solo concert by Bernarda and Marcos Fink, as well as a show by the popular 2Cellos.

The festival will draw to a close with St Petersburg's Academic State Ballet Theatre of Boris Eifman performing the ballet "The Brothers Karamazov".
