With Croatia entering the EU on Monday, several changes were introduced on border crossings, including the abolishment of custom control and the introduction of single police checkpoints, Virant said.

The single police checkpoints were introduced at 33 out of a total of 57 crossings along the Slovenian-Croatian border. For now, the two biggest border crossings, Gruškovje/Macelj and Jelšane/Rupa, will remain exempt.

Gradually, single police checkpoints will be introduced at all border crossings, said Virant.

Ostojić said that waiting lines to cross the border will be reduced as of today. Indeed, traffic across the border was reported to be faster today.

Ostojić said that Croatian police expected help from their Slovenian colleagues as Croatia will enter the Schengen zone. He moreover said that Croatia will take over control of the Schengen border in two years.

The single police checkpoints were set up on the Slovenian side, because these checkpoints are better equipped and ensure confidentiality of the Schengen information system.
