18th Anniversary of Srebrenica Massacre Marked
Activists put on a stand in Stritarjeva Street, with AI representative Metka Naglič telling reporters that they wanted to point to two large problems - one being that not all war criminals in Bosnia have been brought to justice.
The other problem is the question of redress. "Numerous victims and their family members are still waiting for redress, which is why we are signing a petition to call on the Bosnian authorities to deal with this issue and enable the victims to deal with this traumatic experience."
The petition can be signed until 9 PM at the stand or on the website of Amnesty International Slovenije. According to Naglič, the response to the campaign is huge.
Prime Minister Alenka Bratušek meanwhile expressed her condolences to the relatives of the Srebrenica victims, expressing the hope that the event will be a "warning to all that something like that should never, ever happen again so close to us".
The National Assembly also marked the anniversary, with Speaker Janko Veber saying that this day "should serve as a reminder that hatred and prejudices are still present today, in the 21st century."
Srebrenica Genocide Remembrance Day has been marked on 11 July since 2009 to commemorate the events in 1995 when the Bosnian Serb forces killed more than 8,000 Bosniak men and boys and displaced almost 25,000 women, children and the elderly from the area of Srebrenica in a matter of days.
