Slovenia Braces for Heatwave Peak, Temps to Reach 40C Again

Relief is not expected before the weekend and temperatures are to climb to around 40 degrees on Wednesday and Thursday.

It will still be hot on Friday. However, thunderstorms that will develop in the afternoon will bring temperatures down slightly. But the real feel is not expected to improve, as the rain will increase humidity significantly.

Slovenia's third and by far the strongest heat wave this summer has seen scorching temperatures persist for more than a week. The highest temperature measured in Slovenia this summer was 40 degrees centigrade in Črnomelj (SE) on Sunday.

The heat caused the sales of ice cream and drinks to escalate, while swimming pools, as well as sea and lake beaches are teeming with swimmers craving relief from the heat.

But the sunny weather and high temperatures have also warmed up the sea, lakes and rivers. To the satisfaction of many bathers, the temperatures do however remain well below record values and water still offers some refreshment.

Up to 6,000 people come to Koper town beach on summer weekends. A nearby hydrological station saw sea temperature exceeding 28 degrees centigrade on Tuesday afternoon. Record values were recorded in July 2010, when the sea temperature exceeded 31 degrees.

Many rivers, including the Kolpa, Krka, Sava and Savinja, have already exceeded 25 degrees. Lakes across the country have also warmed up. Perhaps the most popular, Bled and Bohinj, were at 26 and 25 degrees on Tuesday.

The Bled castle beach, which provides only one of several bathing spots around the lake, welcomes around 1,000 people on weekends, according to beach representative Bojan Žirovec.

All the biggest Slovenian retailers say that the sales of non-alcoholic as well as alcoholic beverages and ice cream have increased.

The only concrete estimate was however provided by Spar, whose sales of water and non-alcoholic beverages went up 12% between 15 July and 4 August compared to the same period a year ago. A 15% increase was recorded in ice cream sales.

Meanwhile, the three heatwaves have already caused much damage in agriculture. According to Agriculture Minister Dejan Židan, a natural disaster would be announced as the damage caused by drought is estimated to exceed the threshold 0.3% of budget revenue.
