The musical directed by Jaša Jamnik features eleven melodies taken from the oeuvre of the band led by Slavko and Vilko Avsenik. It takes place in the 1970s, when the Avsenik brothers were at the peak of their career.
Jamnik has told the STA that this is his directorial debut musicals-wise, adding that the musical is based on music which has been virtually embraced as national tradition.
The musical has been already performed three times at the Studenec open-air theatre near Ljubljana, where it received positive reactions both in terms of music and dance, according to him.
The line-up features the accordion band Gregorji, who play original music of the Avsenik Brothers Ensemble, and the Artifex dance company, which have managed to blend folklore dance with hip hop.
More than 20 performers in the musical also include popular veteran actors Nataša Tič Ralijan and Gojmir Lešnjak, while costumes have been designed by acclaimed designer Alan Hranitelj.
After the official premiere in Ljubljana, the show will travel to the coastal town of Portorož on 28 September.
The producers plan to take the musical on the road, in Slovenia as well as abroad, for five years. They expect to attract some 100,000 spectators.
