Slovenia fell to a 4:13 hole early in the first quarter, but recovered by the end of the period, only to surrender another lead to the Poles in the second quarter, which finished with Poland leading 36:28.

Slovenia were expected to make a push in the second half, but Poland were determined to earn their first and only win at Eurobasket, increasing the lead to 11 points by the end of the third, and finishing off the uninspired Slovenians in the last period.

Reigning European champions Spain meanwhile prevailed 83:59 over Georgia to grab the top spot in the group. Also advancing along the host nation and Spain are Croatia, which beat the Czech Republic today 70:53.

Finland took a 1:1 record into the second round after beating Greece 86:77 to claim second place in Group D. Also advancing from the group which played in the coastal town of Koper are the undefeated Italy and Greece.

Slovenia, Spain, Croatia, Finland, Italy and Greece will thus form Group F of the second round, which will play their first matches on Thursday in Ljubljana's Stožice Arena.

A 76:66 win over Macedonia in Jesenice meanwhile propelled Latvia into the second round from Group B. Also advancing from the group are Serbia and Lithuania, with the latter losing to Bosnia-Herzegovina but advancing by means of a better point differential.

Ukraine also rolled into the second round, defeating Great Britain 87:68 in Ljubljana to join France and Belgium in the newly-formed Group E, which will also feature Serbia, Lithuania and Latvia.

All second round matches will be played in Stožice Arena starting on Wednesday after a day off on Tuesday.
