Running until 24 November 2013, the biennial will "take a step back" to explore the nature of graphic processes, according to Nevenka Šivavec of the International Centre of Graphic Arts (MGLC).
Apart from the main exhibition entitled "Interruption", this year's biennial will also feature the exhibition "The Biennial of Graphic Arts - Serving You Since 1955" on the history of the biennial and the "Leisure, Discipline and Punishment" project, joining festivals in four European countries.
"Interruption", which is to be put up at the MGLC, in Jakopič's Promenade in the Tivoli Park and at the Museum of Modern Art, will present different aspects of development of graphic arts in modern times.
The exhibition will showcase 42 projects by almost 50 artists, of whom some were chosen from almost 300 applications, according to the exhibition's curator Deborah Cullen of Miriam and Ira D. Wallach Art Gallery at the University of Columbia, New York.
The exhibition "The Biennial of Graphic Arts - Serving You Since 1955", will meanwhile open in the Cankarjev dom arts centre on 18 September, presenting the dependence of the event on the official cultural policy and the impact on the Non-Aligned Movement on culture and art in the former Yugoslavia.
It will also shed a light on the institutional crises of the biennial in the 1980s and 1990s and various attempts at its repositioning because of the changed geopolitical circumstances. The exhibition will be on display until 24 November.
As has become customary, the biennial will also present the recipients of awards from the last edition of the festival.
Regina Jose Galindo, who won the 29th biennial Grand Prix, will have her work showcased at the Jakopič Gallery, whereas Miklos Erdely, the recipient of the lifetime achievement award, will have an exhibit at the Museum of Contemporary Art Metelkova.
The opening ceremony will be held in the evening in front of the MGLC, with Culture Minister Uroš Grilc in attendance.
