Bled PEN Meetings Upgraded to International Status

The decision to that effect was taken at a recent International PEN Congress which was held in Reykjavik, Iceland.

The congress was attended by two Slovenian PEN members, Edvard Kovač, the former chair of the Writers for Peace Committee at PEN International, and Tone Peršak, who was elected to succeed him for a three-year term.

The Bled meetings are traditionally organised by the Slovenian PEN Centre and the Writers for Peace Committee at PEN International, which is seated at the Slovenian PEN Centre.

The Reykjavik congress also decided that Bled would be the centre of all PEN committees, which means, according to Kovač, that the Slovenian PEN Centre would coordinate all committees. Moreover, the sessions of the Peace Committee will become the central event of the Bled meetings.

Kovač also said that a decision in principle for Bled to host a festival of literature for peace was taken in Iceland. He added that now "we can also start thinking about introducing an international peace award of PEN International which would be also conferred at Bled".
