The updated freedom of information act would allow public access to information such as the amount of an individual loan, the name of the borrower, the person who approved the loan and the person that signed the loan contract. Access would only be opened up to loans that have or will end up at the bad bank.

Virant told the press Friday that the changes enjoyed support of both the Corruption Prevent Commission and the Information Commissioner. The principle of banking secrecy will remain in place for loans not associated with the almost EUR 4.8bn hole in Slovenia's banks, he said.

Turning to the new coalition agreement, Virant said expected the document to be drafted by the end of next week and finished by end of February. The DL would oppose any new taxes and push for measures to help the youth and step up the campaign against corruption, Virant said.

Virant told the press he was confident that the government had taken the right path with the bank bailout. Still, problems remain, including high public debt and unemployment, Virant said.

He was also critical of the real estate tax, saying the DL would prefer to provide funds for the state coffers via other means.

On the competitiveness of the Slovenian economy, he said the government should consider lowering the burden on companies by reducing red tape and cutting the taxation of labour.
