Ljubljana Mayor Insists Stožice Lease Deal Was Legal

Janković rejected accusations that the contract on the rental of the car park and business premises at the new centre had been fictitious and claims he can prove that.

He added that a visit like today's surely is not a good way to start the day and all this over a sports complex "that is so beautiful, one of the most beautiful in Europe".

The questioning of Janković came after police searched in September 2012 the offices and home of Janković and companies involved in Stožice, including Grep, the main contractor on the project, and of Electa, a company owned by Janković's sons

While other irregularities are said to be suspected in the Stožice story, investigators searched the home of Defence Minister Roman Jakič recently over the lease contract as well.

Along with the Ljubljana municipality, Grep also got sport facilities manager Zavod Tivoli, headed at the time by Jakič, and the company operating Ljubljana's parking lots and markets on board for the deal.

The contentious contract, which envisaged an annual rent of EUR 1.8m, allegedly enabled Grep to get EUR 50m of a EUR 115m loan from the NLB bank. Police are said to believe that the contract was fraudulent and that its only goal was securing the loan.
