Holocaust Victims Remembered at Auschwitz
While the central international ceremony will be held at the Auschwitz camp, liberated to this day 69 years ago, a ceremony organised by the Slovenian National Liberation Movement Association of WWII veterans was held in Ljubljana on Sunday.
The Ljubljana Jewish Culture Centre will meanwhile host a ceremony to observe the remembrance day in the Slovenian capital on Monday evening.
A number of events are moreover being organised by the Sinagoga Maribor Centre of Jewish Cultural Heritage as part of Shoah - Let Us Remember project.
Foreign Minister Karl Erjavec is the honorary patron of the project and the Foreign Ministry already cooperated with the centre this year in organising a traditional panel entitled "One Name Each Year" which highlights extraordinary individuals from this tragic period of history.
Slovenia has been active in efforts to preserve and safeguard the historical truth about the Holocaust and is committed to informing young generations.
A book entitled "Unknown Trails: Judaism, Anti-Semitism and the Holocaust in Slovenian History" was the result of a 2013 project organised as part of efforts to raise awareness.
Around 63,000 Slovenians were taken to Nazi and Fascist concentration camps. 12,000 never returned.
