Ljubljana-Koper Railway Reopened for Diesel Engines

The train was sent off after a diesel engine managed to break through the sleet-covered tracks between Pivka and Borovnica on route to the coast, rail operator Slovenske železnice said in a press release.
Both main tracks have now been cleared and will reopen for traffic. For the foreseable future the cargo will only be shipped by diesel engines, as the overhead electricity lines have been severely damaged.
About 60 trains operate to and from the Port of Koper on a normal day but only 48 are expected to do so in the next 48 hours, port operator Luka Koper said.
An estimated 170,000 tonnes of cargo is awaiting transshipment in Koper and the port expects to clear the backlog within two weeks.
Earlier today some of the cargo was rerouted north via Jesenice, but that route has very limited capacity.
Slovenske železnice estimates the damage to rail infrastructure at about EUR 20m.
