SKI JUMPING: Austria Win Men's Team Event at Planica
Germany was fourth, scoring 1,001.5 points in what was the last team event of the season.
Competing in front of the home crowd, team Slovenia showed the weakest performance this season. Nonetheless it claimed third place in the Nations Cup.
Slovenia's star jumper Peter Prevc, his younger brother Cene Prevc, Nejc Dežman and Robert Kranjec were in fourth place after the first round but as weather conditions deteriorated, so did their performance in round two.
"The weather was what it was," said Peter Prevc, who is to receive the small crystal globe tomorrow. "We ran out of luck....we made more mistakes but we must be satisfied after all. Nobody made a big mistake and others were simply better. Differences were small."
For Cene Prevc this was the first team competition at this level, "It was an extraordinary feeling, the first team event in the World Cup."
Meanwhile, veteran Kranjec was unhappy with the weather conditions. "Rain is usually not a problem. But the skis must gain speed, otherwise it is hard. The Austrians and Germans also had a lot of luck today."
"I want to congratulate the boys. It was a big battle," head coach Goran Janus said after the competition. Considering the conditions in which the Slovenian team jumped, the result is good, he said.
Despite poor weather, spectators were able to enjoy long jumps, as a new hill record was made by Poland's Piotr Zyla, who touched down at 141 metres in first round.
Tomorrow, men will compete in the last individual competition this spring. The final event of the season could however be marred by very bad weather, as the Environmental Agency issued a warning that large amounts of rain may fall in the western parts of the country on Sunday.
