Slovenia is sending a 19-strong team with two water pumps to Serbia as well as two rescue units with boats numbering 12 staff, a military and a police helicopter with crews to Bosnia-Herzegovina.

The rescue teams are being dispatched immediately, in response to the countries' request for help, a release from the government said.

The Defence Ministry was put in charge of coordination of help to both countries, including potential dispatch of additional staff and equipment.

Both countries have declared a state of emergency due to massive flooding, which has so far claimed at least five lives in Serbia and one in Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Thousands of people have had to be evacuated as many homes have been destroyed. Power and water supplies have been cut off and roads and railways closed.

President Borut Pahor has expressed his condolences to both countries. His foreign affairs adviser Marko Makovec, who is currently in Belgrade, extended his commiserations to Serbian President Tomislav Nikolić in person.
