Key Transmission Line Officially Launched

The 80 km transmission line connects the Posavje energy basin, home to the Krško nuclear power plant and several hydro plants, with the area of highest electricity consumption in central Slovenia.

ELES, the transmission system operator, says the investment will improve the quality of electricity delivery and expand cross-border transmission capacity, which is crucial in the event of blackouts.

The project, which has a final price tag of EUR 63m, has been 15 years in the making, as planning started in 1998. Actual construction began in the autumn of 2011 and lasted two years, with testing carried out since.

The transmission line "is a realisation of the long-term goals of Slovenian energy," said Prime Minister Alenka Bratušek, the keynote speaker at the inauguration ceremony.

ELES general manager Aleksander Mervar noted that the transmission line had already proved its worth in the testing phase, as it supplied central Slovenia and Gorenjsko during the ice storm in late February that destroyed many power lines.
