President Dismisses Ambassador to Australia

The Foreign Ministry conducted an investigation that showed Oman was not on the official guest list. However, the ministry later received photos and other proof showing Balažic sitting at the same honorary table as Oman.

Balažic, who has been ambassador to Australia since 2011, will be dismissed as of 31 July, as proposed by the Foreign Ministry and the government.

Formally, he is being recalled because he violated the foreign affairs act, which stipulates ambassadors must maintain good relations with Slovenian diaspora organisations.

Balažic, who also covered from Canberra Malaysia, Indonesia and New Zealand, is the fourth Slovenian ambassador to date to be recalled.

Nataša Vodušek was recalled as the ambassador to Bosnia-Herzegovina in 2008 for causing a car accident under the influence of alcohol. Two ambassadors were recalled in 2010 for violating the foreign affairs act - Ambassador to Egypt Borut Mahnič and Ambassador to Spain Peter Reberc.
