Energy Union to Discuss General Strike

The debate will take place as a strike by miners at the Velenje Coal Mine enters a second week.

The trade union representing workers in the energy sector first threatened to go on strike in March, but put off industrial action after an agreement was reached with the government on measures related to the closure of Trbovlje-Hrastnik Coal Mine.

However, the situation at HSE has raised tensions, as the workers are unhappy with measures to improve the finances of the power holding, including a May overhaul of supervisory boards as part of efforts to streamline operations.

The trade union says that the management of HSE is encroaching on workers rights without engaging in dialogue. It also demands that it be consulted by the state on strategic issues related to the sector.

The meeting of the trade union will take place as a strike by miners at the Velenje Coal Mine enters a second week. The miners started the strike, the second this year, after they did not get the holiday allowance guaranteed by the collective bargaining contract.

Virtually all 900 miners at the mine have joined the industrial action to express their unhappiness over the uncertain fate of the mine supplying the nearby TEŠ power plant and strained relations within the HSE group, which owns the mine and TEŠ.

The miners are expected to decide on Monday whether to ramp up the strike, as part of which coal supply to TEŠ would be be reduced by a quarter.
