Coalition Talks Set to Begin in Next Days

The National Electoral Commission will begin counting the ballots sent in by mail from abroad on Monday but the final unofficial results are not expected to be announced until Tuesday.

Before formally launching coalition talks, Cerar would like to wait for the release of the results of the vote from abroad so as to be sure whether the People's Party (SLS) has managed to get into the National Assembly or not.

The current results indicate that the SLS has narrowly missed the 4% parliamentary threshold, after having been in every parliament since independence. The party is meeting today to examine what went wrong and to decide on further steps.

The Miro Cerar Party (SMC), which won 36 of the 90 seats in the National Assembly, has revealed few details about its position in coalition talks except for Cerar saying that he would like to build a broad coalition but also one that would be solid platform-wise.

He has only ruled one party out, i.e. the Democrats (SDS), who came second in the election, but labelled the vote undemocratic and the result illegitimate arguing that their leader Janez Janša, who is in prison for corruption, was eliminated from the race by his political opponents.

Cerar expects the outlines of the new coalition to be clear by the time new parliament is inaugurated at its maiden session, expectedly on 1 August. President Borut Pahor plans to conduct consultations with deputy factions on the prime minister-designate in roughly a week after the maiden session.
