Consumer Confidence at Five-Year High

The consumer confidence index was up three percentage points in a third straight monthly improvement, and up 19 points year-on-year to -19%, the highest since September 2009, Statistics Office data shows.

Both increases were due to more upbeat expectations about the general economic situation over the next 12 months, households' finances and prospects for savings and the level of unemployment.

Out of 12 indicators the strongest monthly improvement was in the one indicating major purchases at present, which was up 8 points from June and 13 points from July 2013.

Out of three indicators monitored quarterly, the one indicating the likelihood of car purchase over the coming 12 months improved, while prospects for new home or home improvement worsened.

The trend was the same in quarterly and annual comparisons.
