His photo entitled "Independence Day", taken in the plains of eastern Colorado, US, shows a dramatic supercell storm.

"What makes the picture particularly strong is that except for the cloud, the rest of the scene is quite ordinary. The crazy UFO-looking shape gives the impression that it's going to suck up the landscape like a tablecloth into a vacuum cleaner," National Geographic Traveler director of photography Dan Westergren said about the photo.

Korošec, whose entry was one of 18,000, said that he encountered many photogenic supercell storms while on storm chasing expeditions in Tornado Alley in the US. The photo he submitted was taken near the town of Julesburg, Colorado, on 28 May 2013, and its title is a reference to the eponymous 1996 science fiction film.

"The storm was tornado warned for more than one hour, but it stayed a low precipitation storm through all its cycles and never produced a tornado, just occasional brief funnels, large hail, and some rain," Korošec also said in his application.

Korošec, a weather expert and experienced photographer, comes from a small village in the south-west of Slovenia. He has been a supervisor at the Road Weather Information System for Slovenia's motorway company DARS since 2005.
