First Ministerial Candidates to Undergo Hearings

Nekategorizirano

Karl Erjavec will be heard by the Foreign Policy Committee in what will be his third hearing as a candidate for foreign minister. He has been in office since early 2012 when the Janez Janša government assumed office and stayed at the post when Alenka Bratušek took over as PM just over a year later.

Also heard today will be the labour minister nominee Anja Kopač Mrak and agriculture minister nominee Dejan Židan, who are expected to be confirmed to resume the positions they held in the Bratušek government. Due to a change in his portfolio, Židan will no longer be responsible for environment.

The Commission for Slovenians Abroad will hear a presentation of Gorazd Žmavc as candidate for diaspora minister without portfolio, a post he has held since February this year, when he took over in a government reshuffle.

The remaining 12 ministerial candidates will be heard by the relevant parliamentary committees on Monday and Tuesday, although two of them will introduce themselves to the interested parliamentary bodies as early as today.

The finance minister nominee Dušan Mramor, who had already served at the post in 2002-2004, will have a presentation on the opposition-controlled Public Finance Oversight Commission and Goran Klemenčič, the candidate for interior minister, on the Petitions, Human Rights and Equal Opportunities Commission.

The latter commission is chaired by Eva Irgl from the Democratic Party (SDS), so debate is expected to be especially interesting since the SDS blames Klemenčič as the former boss of Slovenia's anti-graft watchdog for the ousting of the Janez Janša government in 2013.

Janša's coalition collapsed after Commission for the Prevention of Corruption, at the time headed by Klemenčič, issued a report on assets of parliamentary party leaders in which it singled out SDS leader Janša and Zoran Janković from Positive Slovenia (PS) as being unable to account for their assets.
