Bratušek Without Clear Plan About Energy Union

Stressing that building a resilient energy union required reducing dependence on imports by boosting renewables and enhancing infrastructure for better internal exchange, Bratušek highlighted the need for a hand-in-hand approach among member states.

It is imperative that everyone is aware of the joint goals and works together in a common direction, Bratušek said as she spoke about energy union goals aimed at promoting renewables by applying the producer pays principle.

Speaking about climate change efforts, Bratušek said the priority of the bloc should be working in concert with global partners, especially China and the US, in drawing up international goals.

"Europe on its own will not be able to solve all the problems. Our climate will be too polluted from those outside," she said in speaking about her strategy for global climate change talks.

Her answers appeared not to convince many MEPs in the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy and the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety, a number of whom indicated they were unhappy with the lack of concrete responses.

Greens MEP Bas Eickhout of the Netherlands was among those who criticised a lack of concrete responses: "We are here for a hearing because you are supposed to be the vice-president for energy union. You say things are difficult, but we all know that. I urge you to be a bit more precise about what you want rather than what the commission has planned."

British conservative MEP Julie Girling was also critical of the "fairly bland and repetitious statements" from Bratušek, who was also made to answers about the integrity investigation into her candidacy back home and some of her past statements and actions.
