Slovenia For Balance Between Fiscal Discipline and Stimulus

"The Slovenian government is somewhere in the middle in this regard, as it understands the importance of both," Cerar told reporters after the close of the two-day summit which saw proponents of stimulus and fiscal discipline confront their views.

The stimulus drive is being led by France and Italy, while Germany and several countries from northern Europe continue to preach fiscal discipline.

Confirming the differences in views, Cerar said that a key conclusions from the meeting was "that were are all on the same page on one issue: that the rules which have been agreed must be respected".

He said this was essential for upholding the rule of law and bolstering trust in the set systems.

For Slovenia the priority is striking the right balance of stimulus while keeping its finances in check, as reflected in the draft version of the 2015 budget.

"This is what our government brings to the table - a need for balance. In a given circumstance, one aspect must be favoured; in another, the other aspect. Above all, we will adhere to our commitments," said Cerar.

The prime minister remained optimistic about the review of Slovenia's budget framework for next year by the European Commission. He said that based on the reactions in Brussels, the document should be approved.

"Of course we will need to implement the things to which we have committed. This will be no easy task," he said.

Cerar is confident that the fiscal plans for next year will help buttress economic growth. "If the government sticks to its path, Slovenia has a got shot of exiting the crisis as planned."

Along with its plans for the budget, the government is also working on short-term measures for optimisation in the economy and elsewhere.

Recapping his talks in Brussels, Cerar said that he had received positive messages from a number of his colleagues. "They see that Slovenia is building political stability and pushing ahead with key projects. This is a good sign. The important thing is to stick to our plans."
