Ljubljana Mayor Targeting Top Post in Olympic Committee
Ljubljana Mayor Zoran Janković became the latest to announce his bid on Friday, joining a former medal-winning Olympian and a veteran OKS member in the race which will be decided on 16 December.
Janković's bid adds a political name to what is gearing up to be a close-fought race for the position, which has been held by Kocijančič since the the establishment of the OKS at the time of Slovenia's independence in 1991.
The three-term mayor of the Slovenian capital will go up against Andraž Vehovar, the silver medallist in slalom canoe at the 1996 Atlanta Summer Games, and current OKS vice president Bogdan Gabrovec, who heads the country's Judo Association.
The OKS is collecting candidacies until 19 November, so it is possible that more candidates will join the race.
The decision on the new president will be taken at the OKS executive council meeting on 16 December.
Janković's candidacy has been endorsed by the Slovenian Handball Association, which he headed from 1996 to 2004.
The OKS is the umbrella sports organisations in the country, bringing together various sports governing bodies.
