Turbines, sluice gates and generators were replaced during the renovation as part of a plan to boost the capacity of the power plant that was built in 1939 under Italian occupation.

"We are happy to be a part of the story about one of the most beautiful Alpine rivers," Vladimir Gabrijelčič, the head of Soške elektrarne, the operator of 27 hydro power plants on the Soča, said at the opening.

Five big hydro power plants on the Soča, including Doblar 1, are systemic, which means that they are used to regulate the market and provide additional energy when energy needs increase.

The state-controlled hydro power plant operator intends to continue its long-term plan to renovate all of its power plants and is to launch renovation of the Plave 1 plant next year.

Soške elektrarne operates six big and 21 small hydro power plants on the Soča.
