Slovenia Experiencing Wettest Year in Nearly 50 Years
With over 40 days to go in the year, new records have already been set for the number of wet days and extreme weather this year.
Moreover, preliminary data show that Slovenia has seen the most precipitation since 1965, with long-term averages exceeded and records set in many areas of the country, according to the Environment Agency.
The agency's Gregor Vertačnik said that it can be safely said that the country has seen the most rain since 1965.
While precipitation records exist for before 1965, the data is based on fewer weather stations, which makes comparisons for years before that less certain.
Vertačnik said that if current trends continue, all areas in Slovenia will see above 1,000 millimetres of precipitation this year.
This would include the northeastern-most Prekmurje region, where precipitation does not usually exceed 800 millimetres.
The capital Ljubljana has seen over 1,750 millimetres of precipitation so far, which is 100 millimetres less than the current annual record set in 1965. The average precipitation in the capital is 1,400 millimetres.
Meanwhile, a new annual record in precipitation has already been set in the coastal town of Porotorož (1,400 mm).
