Flag Carrier Selling Two Jets to Repay Debt

The state shareholders approved a management proposal for the sale and lease-back of two 86-seat Canadair CRJ 900 jets at a general assembly on Monday.

The money raised with the sale would be used to repay loans and subsequently bolster the company's liquidity and credit rating, Adria said on Monday.

The two CRJ 900 jets are part of a fleet of six operated by Slovenia's flag carrier, which also leases two Airbus A319 narrow-body jets and owns two smaller CRJ 200 regional jets.

Chairman Mark Anžur said that the company is currently conducting comprehensive fleet restructuring as part of rationalisation. The fleet size will be reduced and preference given to larger jets, he announced.

The general assembly also reviewed a management review of the business environment in Slovenia, as part of which the management has pointed to several pressing hurdles.

One of the main issues raised by the flag carrier is the price of jet fuel and air navigation charges by the Slovenian Air Traffic Control.

While no details of the debate the issue of the business environment were released by the company, unofficial information suggested the company is arguing that it loses about EUR 2m a year due to expensive fuel and air navigation charges.

Anžur meanwhile announced that the flag carrier is registering a rise in passenger numbers for this year and that it is expecting to end the year around the break-even mark.

Last year the company carried just over 1m passengers and finished the year with a net loss of EUR 2.87m.

Adria Airways is one of 15 companies slated for sale as part of the 2013 privatisation package. Recent statements from the Slovenia Sovereign Holding (SSH) indicated the company would be put up for sale at the beginning of 2015.
