Poor visibility caused by snow and strong wind is blamed for the accident involving around 50 vehicles, which occurred near Postojna in the direction of Koper, according to police spokesperson Anita Leskovec.

As a result, the motorway section between Unec and Razdrto has been closed since early in the afternoon.

As many as 47 cars, three lorries and a bus were involved in the pile-up after a lorry skidded off the road, the Civil Rescue and Disaster Relief Administration said.

A report by the news web site of the public broadcaster TV Slovenija said the victim was a 25-year-old Swiss national.

Fourteen of the injured have been transported to the Ljubljana UKC hospital, three with grave injuries, duty traumatologist Marko Dobravec has told the STA, adding that one is in a critical condition.

The work of rescue services on the site has been hampered by bad weather conditions but the Koper traffic police commander Mitja Palčič said they hoped the motorway could be reopened between 9 PM and 10 PM.

After people involved in the collision have been brought to the Postojna motorway base, damaged vehicles are being town there now. Once all the vehicles are removed, the road also needs to be ploughed, Palčič said.

The motorway company DARS has urged drivers to exercise utmost caution, especially in the western parts of the country, where is keeps snowing and a strong bora wind is blowing.
