Petition in Favour of Privatisation Launched

Nekategorizirano

The Petition for Privatisation finds that state ownership of companies does not ensure prosperity for people, so the petitioners urge the authorities to sell state-owned companies to pave the way for "political stability, economic growth and general prosperity".

"Due to state ownerships the Slovenian economy is held hostage to politics. Slovenian state-owned companies are doing much worse than comparable private companies by all major indicators," the appeal, addressed to PM Miro Cerar, ministers and MPs, reads.

The petition has been signed by economists Janez Šušteršič, Igor Masten, Gorazd Justinek, Anže Burger and Rado Pezdir, as well as Žiga Turk, who served as education minister in the 2011-2012 Janez Janša government along with Šušteršič, and former intelligence chief Damir Črnčec, among others.

The latter signed the petition as the head of association European Slovenia, one of the initiators of the petition along with organisations Youth for Change, IBEX - Youth for Free Future and Think Free.

The appeal counters the anti-privatisation petition launched by a group of leftist economists, academics and public figures in December, which data by the Mladina magazine shows has so far been signed by 11,500 people.

The group does not rule out holding a protest or filing for a referendum unless what they see as the "fire sale" of state companies stops. One of the signatories, the opposition United Left (ZL) is in a third attempt today to get parliament to retract its go-ahead for the sale of 15 state companies.
