Concert by the John Zorn New Masada Quartet
Apr 29 Ljubljana
The celebrated US saxophonist and composer John Zorn will perform a concert with his New Masada Quartet at Cankarjev Dom.
The concert was initially scheduled for the 2023 Ljubljana Jazz Festival but had to be postponed due to illness.
Established in 2019, the New Masada Quartet has quickly become regarded as one of the best and most exciting of Zorn's bands.
Apart from Zorn on the alto saxophone, the quartet also features Julian Lage on the electric guitar, bass player Jorge Roeder and drummer Kenny Wollesen.
The ensemble plays 'the best of Masada songbooks'. These are considered the most important chapter in the iconic musician's creative career.
The Masada catalogue found inspiration in blending the new (radical) Jewish culture and the sound of Ornette Coleman's acoustic quartet, a late 1950s band that remains crucial to understanding both the past and future of jazz music practices.
Zorn has performed in Ljubljana before, both with his previous ensembles and solo.
