Harvest of the World's Oldest Vine
Sept 27 - Sept 29 Maribor
Maribor's Old Vine will be harvested on 29 September in the culmination of the 38th festival dedicated to what is arguably the world's oldest grapevine.
The annual festival in Slovenia's second largest city features a number of events linked to wine and culinary delights, along with a market of local produce and crafts, live music and rafting.
Visitors will be able to sample excellent wines and food to the accompaniment of live jazz music at Maribor Castle in the evening on 27 September, and discover new tastes and wine stories with the help of top sommeliers at a dinner at Seven restaurant the next evening.
A local produce market will be held in Main Square on Friday and Saturday before moving to the market next to the Old Vine on Sunday. There will be live music performances, tastings and workshops.
The festival will culminate with the harvest at 11am on Sunday. The first grape will be cut by Jože Protner, who is credited with revitalising the Old Vine and designing the programme for the first festive harvest in 1987.
The event will feature performances by the academic folklore ensemble Študent, Sebastijan Lukovnjak and the Leonart ensemble.
