Ljubljana Festival
Jun 20 2025 - Sept 12 2025 Ljubljana
The 73rd Ljubljana Festival will see around 100 events, spanning opera, ballet, musicals, concerts across multiple genres and featuring local and international artists.
The opening Summer Night concert in Congress Square will honour the legendary singer and composer Janez Bončina Benč, while the renowned Vienna Philharmonic will perform the closing concert at Cankarjev Dom under the baton of Franz Welser-Möstand.
Other highlights include Joseph Haydn's oratorio The Creation, staged by Spain's innovative La Fura dels Baus, the music of Ennio Morricone conducted by his son Andrea, Edward Clug's choreographic hit Cluster, performances by ballet stars Svetlana Zakharova and Vadim Repin, mezzo-soprano Magdalena Kožena with Rome's Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia under conductor Daniel Harding, violinist Maxim Vengerov, and the pianist Martha Argerich.
Opera offerings feature Verdi's Othello by the Maribor Opera and a special concert performance of Puccini's Tosca. This showcases a selection of arias with US-Canadian soprano Sondra Radvanovsky, US tenor Jonathan Tetelman, and Welsh bass-baritone Sir Bryn Terfel - a line-up that festival director Darko Brlek described as rare in Europe outside top venues like Covent Garden.
The musical theatre programme includes Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera and Les Miserables performed by Zagreb's Komedija Theatre.
Popular music concerts feature the annual appearance by singer-songwriter Vlado Kreslin with his bands Mali Bogovi and Beltinška Banda, plus Croatia's Rade Šerbedžija with Zapadni Kolodvor, and popular Slovenian acts Hamo & Tribute to Love (with the RTV Slovenia Big Band), and Tomaž Domicelj.
