Ljubljana – The presidency of the junior coalition Social Democrats (SD) decided on Monday that the party will put forward its own candidate for the upcoming presidential election. The internal candidacy procedure will remain open until 15 July.
Fajon told the press before the presidency meeting today that in line with tradition, the candidates will include someone from the leadership of the party.
When asked about the sensibility of left-leaning parties each running with their own candidate, Fajon said the decision made today was the only logical move for the SD, “a traditional and still the strongest party on the left”.
However, she admitted that two strong candidates had already announced their bids left of centre: Marta Kos and Nataša Pirc Musar. Still, she believes this “fragmentation is an opportunity for us to find a good candidate to represent the SD”.
The party presidency also decided today that an electoral congress would take place on 8 October. Last week, Fajon said she would stand for party president again.
