Slovenian journalist arrested in Iraq, report says

Ljubljana – Matej Kavčič, a reporter for the small independent radio station Radio Student, was arrested in Iraq on Sunday, most likely in Baghdad, the newspaper Večer reports on its website. According to the available information, he was arrested by the army, which disputes his status of reporter.

The Slovenian Association of Journalists (DNS) has already reported the incident to international journalist organisations, while the Slovenian Embassy in Ankara, which also covers Iraq, is trying to contact Iraq.

Radio Študent meanwhile told Večer that they had come across a report about Kavčič’s arrest in Iraqi media and then notified the Slovenian embassy in Turkey.

The last time the radio station was in contact with the reporter was two days ago, whereupon he could not longer be contacted.

Kavčič left for Iraq in January as a freelancer to report on the Yezidis.

He is a member of the DNS, has an international press cared and all the necessary papers to prove his journalist status, Večer reports.
