Christmas festivities start

After the pre-holiday shopping frenzy, many stores, banks and offices will close early on Christmas Eve, which is traditionally celebrated with dinner in the family circle in Slovenia.

Many have already decorated their Christmas trees or set up nativity scenes according to a tradition dating back to the 18th century in Slovenia.

Live nativity scenes will also be staged all over the country until New Year. One of the best known is the one at the Postojna Cave, a top tourist destination.

Christmas is followed by Independence and Unity Day in Slovenia and many take leave until after New Year's Day, especially as schools also break for a ten-day holiday today.

Before the break starts, President Borut Pahor will be joining youths with special needs to bake Christmas delicacies for the children who will spend their holidays at care homes.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from Slovenia:
