Prevc, one of the favourites to win the prestigious series, had led the Oberstdorf event after the fist jump of 129.5 metres to score 147.7 points.

The overall leader in the FIS Ski Jumping World Cup added another half a metre to his second jump but Freund was too much to handle as he landed at the 137.5 metre mark.

Hayböck meanwhile had a record jump of the evening in the final series, landing at 139 metres.

Three more Slovenians participated in the final series, with Anže Lanišek finishing 16th, Domen Prevc 27th and Robert Kranjec 30th.

Prevc will be looking in the remaining three events to improve on his best result at the Four Hills Tournament, third place in the 2014-15 season.

The opener in Oberstdorf will be followed by meets in Germany's Garmisch-Partenkirchen on 1 January, in Austria's Innsbruck on 3 January and in Austria's Bischofshofen on 6 January.
