Novo mesto to get archaeological park

The park will be situated on the main archaeological site Kapiteljska njiva and the near-by hill of Marof.

While preparations for it have been under way for a decade, the park is expected to be up and running in three to five years.

Novo mesto, which was nicknamed the "City of Situlas" after the many elaborate bucket-shaped vessels from the Iron Age found in the area, will thus get a new tourist, recreational and educative centre, according to chief archaeologist on the Kapiteljska njiva site Borut Križ.

The park is conceived as a green area with archaeological features. These will include a reconstruction of at least a part of the prehistoric city wall, Iron Age dwellings and graves and a presentation of domestic animals and crops from the period.

Visitors will also be able to witness some everyday life scenes from prehistory and test their skills in various workshops.

The park is also to include an info-point, where the archaeological heritage of the Novo mesto area will be presented along with archaeological routes of the wider area. Guided tours will also be offered.

The project is valued at EUR 5.8m, with most of the funds coming from the EU.

Mayor Gregor Macedoni has said that the park would be one of the municipal priorities in terms of financing in the next two years.
