Ljubljana to get alternative shop this year

It will include Slovenia's first shop without packaging, a product exchange, and a multi-purpose coffee shop offering exclusively local and fair trade goods.

It will probably function as a cooperative and eschew the traditional "buy, use and discard" policy of consumerism.

The location of the centre is yet to be agreed on with Mayor Zoran Janković, the utility said.

The shop is just one of Snaga's many projects promoting smart waste management and responsible consumerism.

Other projects for this year include cooperation with local restaurants in reducing the amount of food waste, and encouraging sustainable consumption through a system of monthly exchange of baby clothes.

"Sustainable development and sustainable orientation is not an obstacle to industry and retail. Quite the contrary," Snaga director Janko Kramžar said.
