The continuous line of human tragedy, which the EU is trying to halt by force, is a perfect mirror for humanity, the daily Delo quoted Videmšek as saying on Wednesday. The journalist has reported about refugees from Italy, Greece, Macedonia, Serbia, Hungary and Turkey, the paper added.

A total of 33 journalists are on the short list for the prizes, which are to be given out in Prague in April in five categories: the investigative reporting award, the distinguished writing award, the commentator award, the innovation award and the special award-refugee crisis.

The Chair of Preparatory Committee and former editor of The Guardian, Peter Preston, said as the short list was announced that "this year exceeds all, is by far the biggest yet: not just in quantity but, crucially, in quality too".

The prize "seeks to find not just the big award winner in national competitions and the stars of international coverage, but also quietly excellent reportage from smaller nations where journalism is an intrinsic part of cementing democracy," Preston added.
