Zorman's winning photo is dedicated to the refugee crisis, while Krivic's shot indicates the hardships of African miners.

Zorman's photo, entitled Waiting to Register, shows a girl covered with a transparent plastic raincoat waiting in line to register at a refugee camp in Preševo, Serbia in October 2015.

Digging the Future by Krivic shows a miner taking a cigarette break during the night shift. It was taken in November in Bani, Burkina Faso, where miners face harsh conditions and exposure to toxic chemicals and heavy metals.

The judging panels of the biggest photo competition in the world reviewed nearly 83,000 works by 5,775 photographers competing in eight categories.

The 59th World Press Photo competition was marked especially by the refugee crisis. The World Press Photo of the Year became Hope for a New Life by Warren Richardson. The photo shows a refugee passing a baby through a razor wire in Röszke, Hungary in August 2015.
