President looking for improvements to nomination procedures

One of the proposals that will be examined is the public presentation of candidates.

Pahor has called the meeting ahead of a series of nominations that he is due to make in the next 18 months, including of several Constitutional Court judges.

While the president customarily consults with deputy groups prior to making nominations, there have been complications in recent nominations, including last year with the nomination of a central bank vice governor who was subsequently turned down by parliament.

While that was an outlier in nominations, the president wants to improve nominations to avoid such scenarios. One way is for the candidates to present themselves in public before the president consults with parties and makes his decision.

"This would likely influence the procedures in parliament," said the president's office ahead of Wednesday's meeting.

It will be the second time that Pahor has called a meeting with representatives of parties to debate nominations, after the procedure for selecting Slovenia's nominees for the European Court of Human Rights hit a snag in July.
